Striking Out Diabetes

The members of the Underdogs are Teagan Walsh, Molly Murphy, Ashley Simmon, and Molly Murphy.

We would like to thank Mary Ann Bryan for sending us banners, tshirts, and merchandise to help us raise diabetes awareness.  We would also like to thank the bowling alley for allowing us to hold our event here and for accommodating us.  We really appreciate it!

We held our event at the Macomb Bowling Alley in order to raise money for The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).  We each made prizes, which were assorted baskets, that we raffled off.  All of that money went towards JDRF.  Each participant paid $10 to get a pair of shoes and bowl, be entered into the raffle, and for a handmade deli sandwich.  Though we did not reach our goal of raising $250, we did raise $200 and donated all of it.

We had a good amount of people show up, though we didn't meet our goal.  People were very interested in the raffle baskets which was a great way to raise money.  People came to bowl and have fun with friends and family, all while contributing to a good cause.  We would like to thank everyone for their participation!

Grand Prarie Luau

Team TENS

Group Members: Tess Wendorf, Norris Andriuskevicius, Shayla Hill, Elizabeth Flesher

Program Description: Our group planned to throw a Luau at the Grand Prairie senior assisted living home on April 27th, 2013. We decided to incorporate live music with bingo and Hawaiian themed snacks. We had about 40 people show up to the Luau. Each person who came got his or her own lei so everyone could look festive. We had games and food in the activity room and live music in the main room. This made extra room for everyone to move and to be able to choose what activity they wanted to do.

Program Evaluation: The program went very well. Having the program start on a Saturday night after dinner (around 5:30pm) made it easier for the residents to just stop by on their way back to their rooms. All of the residents loved getting their own leis. The live music gave our luau a more festive feel and the residents were able to make requests so everyone was involved. Bingo was also a big hit. The residents enjoyed the prizes (candy and crackers) so much that someone had to go get more halfway through the program. A couple days after the program we went back to see what the residents thought of the luau. We got all positive feedback from all staff and residents that we talked to. It was a successful program.

Thank You: We would like to thank Grand Prairie for providing a place to throw a luau for their residents. We would also like to thank the residents of Grand Prairie for showing up and making this luau fun for everyone who attended.

Team Awesome Sauce

Group Members: Ryan Mesina, Erin Baldwin, Holly Gloodt, Cory Signa

Event location: Macomb After School Program, Lincoln School

We would like to thank the Macomb After School Program and Lincoln School for allowing us to work with them to provide a fun afternoon for the children.

Description: Our group decided to team up with the Macomb After School program to take over the gym portion of the program for the K-3rd grade students. We provided the children with a fun afternoon of exciting games and laughs. We had each grade of students for 30 minutes before they rotated stations.

The first group that we had was the 1st grade students. We started off by introducing each other then got right into the games. We told the children that if they behaved and acted nicely then we would give them goodie bags of candy when we were finished. We decided to play with the parachute for the majority of the time we had them. Some of the parachute games we played were popcorn, where we would place foam balls on the parachute and try to keep them from falling; merry-go-round, where all the students would walk around in a circle while listening to music and change direction when the music changed; the color game, where a certain color would be called out and whichever students were holding that color would run under the parachute before it fell; and the shark game, where two students would be picked to be the shark and they would be under the parachute and grab another student.

Following the parachute games, we played another game called dyno tag. This was played by having the students act like dinosaurs while one student would try to tag the other dinosaurs. If a student was tagged then they would sit down. After these games, we had the students sit in a circle and we handed out goodie bags. This whole process was repeated 2 more times with the 2nd grade students in a group and a combination of the kindergarteners and 3rd graders. The only difference with these groups compared to the first group was we varied the rules of the games and description based on age. After the entire program was finished, we got all of the students together and provided ice cream for them.

Evaluation: Overall, the program went very smooth.  We evaluated our program based on the accomplishment of our goals.  Out of the seven goals, six of them were accomplished.  The only goal that we personally didn’t accomplish was to give the kids opportunity to meet new people.  This didn’t work for us because all of the kids already knew each other and were all friends.  We also evaluated the program by the participation of the children.  Out of the 70 plus children in the program every one of them participated with a positive attitude.  In the end all of the children left with a smile from ear to ear wishing we could still stay.

"Spring Into Spring"

Group Members: Rachel Cawthorn, Sean Fichtel, James Mettler, Rick Ingram, Jessica Ortiz

Event Location: YMCA Day Care Macomb, IL 61455

Program Description: Our team planned and implemented a program for the three year old students at the YMCA Day Care. Our program consisted of three different activities in a two hour period. For the first activity, Rachel read them the story "Green Eggs and Ham" then the participants received a version of green eggs. Their version was vanilla pudding with green food coloring, and a vanilla wafer placed in the center. The participants were then split into three groups and assigned to a table. Each table had a different craft for them to do. At the first table the participants got to decorate a butterfly with a clothespin glued to the center. They had markers, glitter, and stickers to use. At the second table, the participants got to make a paper plate bunny. The paper plate had eyes, ears, and nose, and the participants got to glue whiskers and  cottons balls on the plate. At the last table, participants got to decorate an egg with markers and stickers. After everyone finished their crafts the students went outside to play games. The participants played duck duck goose, ring around the Rosie, and follow the leader.

Program Evaluation: Overall the program went very well. The participants were very interactive during the story and were excited to try their own "green eggs" at the end. They all tried the funny concoction not knowing it was actually pudding. The craft stations worked well until the participants began wandering to different stations before it was time to rotate but the crafts were easy and fun for them to do. Our last activity, playing games outside, got the participants moving and it released a lot of their energy. The games went smoothly and they played together well. The participants had fun throughout the entire program and enjoyed each of our activities. We received positive feedback from the staff and even the day care Director Sarah Ewen said she loved the program.

Thank you to Sarah Ewen and the YMCA Day Care for allowing us to put on this program and helping us along the way!

Creative Solutions "Horse Lovers Event"

Group Members: Abi Schniepp, Kaitlin Perchalski, Amanda Kay Kester

Event Location: Swan Creek Stables, Avon, Illinois

Event Description:
Our team planned the Horse Lovers Event allowing the Girl Scout Troop in Bushnell, Illinois to learn more about horses and ultimately receive their "Horse Lovers Badge." The girls ranged in age from 5 to 11 years old. They learned about safety around horses, how to groom a horse, about Tacking horses, and each girl got a chance to ride a horse. The staff at Swan Creek Stables not only provided the venue, but also helped lead the event, the Western Illinois University Equestrian Club also helped teach the Girl Scouts. The event allowed the girls to learn in a hands-on setting.
All 15 girls learned about safety around horses then they were split up into three groups, Bays, Paints, and Chestnuts. While one group was getting a 30 minute, miniature riding lesson, the other two groups learning about grooming and taking in 20 minute increments. After time was up the groups would rotate so they would all get a chance to learn and do all of the activities. While the last group was finishing up the miniature riding lesson the rest of the girls enjoyed watching and talking to each other.

Event Evaluation:
All the Girl Scouts really seemed to enjoy the event, and will hopefully keep it as a cherished childhood memory. Kaitlin, Abi, and I learned that we could have created another activity for the event, so the girls did not have to stand around and watch the final lesson, even though they generally seemed to enjoy watching and socializing. As a team we all adapted well. Having children and horses kept  Kaitlin, Abi, and I on our toes. Over all the event was a success.
